Thomas Eldon Bowman
Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance
|
Details of Disappearance
Thomas, of Redondo Beach, was last seen walking with family members on a trail in Arroyo Seco Canyon. Thomas ran ahead to the family vehicle and when his family members arrived at the vehicle the child was not there. He vanished less than a mile from the Altadena home his family was visiting.
While Tommy's father, Eldon Bowman and his family retraced their steps looking for Tommy, the boy had continued south until, adjacent to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, he ascended a trail to the west end of Altadena Drive. Two witnesses saw a boy believed to be Tommy near the trailhead on Altadena Drive. Further east, another woman in the 700 block saw a boy matching Tommy's description crying as he walked eastbound along the street.
Massive searches were organized.
Mack Ray Edwards has been named as a suspect in the case. Between 1953 and 1968, Edwards, who committed suicide in 1971, is known to have slain a half-dozen children. Police now believe he's responsible for Tommy's disappearance and consider him a "person of interest" in up to 13 other cases of missing children. Edwards made no mention of Tommy Bowman in his original confession, but later bragged in prison that his murders numbered 18.
