Details of Disappearance
Fay Rawley, a wealthy farmer, was last seen in Macomb at 8:10 p.m. on November 8, 1953. He was driving a green Cadillac.
The Fulton County Sheriff at the time, Virgil Ball, believed that Rawley was murdered, his body placed into the trunk of his green Cadillac and his car taken to a mine and buried under tons of dirt.
After taking office in 1954, Virgil had received a tip that a green Cadillac, the same car that Rawley owned, was seen in a strip mine on the outskirts of town. This tip led to several excavations of the mine. The first digs at the mine began in 1957 and ended later that year due to several setbacks and dangerous conditions.
In 1962, Virgil Ball, now Fulton County Treasurer, started a second excavation for Rawley's car, paying for it out of his own pocket. Similar to the first dig, troubles with walls giving way and causing slides plagued the second excavation and operations ceased. By Virgil Ball's death in 1999, no progress had been made on the case.
According to the Fulton County Sheriff's Department, the last known activity on the case included tips received in the 90s; however, nothing panned out. The disappearance of Fay Rawley is still an open case.
