Details of Disappearance
Rose was last seen in the summer of 1973. The missing date is an approximation.

Rose hasn't been seen or heard from since 1973, when she sent a final letter home after slipping away from a controversial substance-abuse treatment program in California. Her parents - now dead - never reported her missing. In letters she wrote in December 1972 and January 1973, Rose talked of her escape from Synanon and living on the streets. She said she was afraid to call home because Synanon might learn of her whereabouts.

Rose, then 14 and a student at what was then Emerson Junior High School, ended up in juvenile court after running away from home. More behavioral problems, including drug-use allegations, followed, and Rose in 1972 was sent to the Synanon Foundation in Oakland, California, a radical substance-abuse treatment program. It is believed Rose was sentenced to the Synanon program by the judge assigned to her case.

Synanon became nationally known as an alternative living community, and evolved into what some described as a cult. In the late 1980s, the group's founder and some of its members were convicted of conspiracy to commit murder; Synanon disbanded in the U.S. several years later.

Rose's father, Jesse J. Cole Jr., died in April 1991. Her mother, Willie Mae Puckett, died in 1999. They had divorced when their children were young.
