Details of Disappearance
Sharon Hensley was last seen in 1973. At the time she was seeing a man named Felix Vail.
Felix Vail was the last known person to be see three women alive — his wife, Mary Horton Vail, who drowned October 28, 1962, his girlfriend, Sharon Hensley, who disappeared in 1973, and his wife, a href"">Annette Craver Vail, who disappeared in October 1984. Felix Vail told authorities that Mary Vail drowned in the Calcasieu River while they were running trotlines. He was arrested, but a grand jury was unable to come to a decision.
Felix told Sharon's family he last saw her in Key West when she hopped on a boat with an Australian couple to sail around the world.
In 1970, police in California arrested Vail for LSD possession and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Vail's 8-year-old son, Bill, told police he overheard his father say to his girlfriend that he had killed Mary, his first wife and the mother of his son. That girlfriend was Hensley, whom Vail blamed for the arrest. Sharon is presumed dead.
Felix Vail is now accused of killing his wife, Mary Horton Vail, whose 1962 death was originally ruled an accidental drowning. Louisiana authorities reopened the case after The Clarion-Ledger published its 2012 story “Gone,” in which a forensic pathologist pointed to a bruise on the back of Mary Vail's head and a scarf 4 inches in her mouth as proof of homicide. Felix Vail was arrested seven months later. The Calcasieu Parish coroner, who is also a forensic pathologist, has ruled her death a homicide. His trial date is set to the summer of 2016. The Louisiana Supreme Court is allowing the disappearances of Sharon and Annette as evidence in the trial.
