Riverside, CA. Old Jail: Constructed when the courthouse opened at the end of the 19th Century and used today to transport inmates from the new Presley Detention Center underneath the street so they are not seen by the public. Most of the old jail is either made of stone walls or old chipped away plaster from the 1890s and extremely creepy. People claim there are cold spots and phantom smells in the tunnel between the courthouse and the jail. Hundreds if not thousands of inmates have been murdered or committed suicide in the jail over the past century; in fact, they keep body bags on hand. Much as it did in the past, the jail still houses criminally insane patients, serial murderers, and sexually violent predators awaiting transport to other facilities, but many remain there year in and year out, and perhaps some have never left. Just last year an inmate attempted to escape by jumping into a tree from the roof; he was impaled by the one of the branches and bled to death while hanging in the tree.
